If you’ve seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, you know this track instantly. The 30-second track plays at the end of each episode, pairs with Misato’s lively, high-speed narration.

Musically, it’s actually a fun piece to transcribe. The track is upbeat and feels much brighter than many other tracks from the series. The melody just spirals upwards, escalating higher and higher, until it ends with a slight downward movement, like a period at the end of a sentence. Then, the screen goes black.

To me, the emotion of the track is a mix of passion (if you can even use this word for EVA) and anxiety, and also lies in the uncertainty about the future (even with the teaser playing, you never really know what’s coming in the next episode).

  • A Closer Look at the Sheets:

The track kicks off with a burst of energy right from the first note. I kept the left hand part mostly in octaves to keep it straightforward and driving. Also, In measure 5, I used a short glissando to mimic the harp in the original track.

Starting from measure 12, I added some “leaps” on top of the left hand octaves. The Bb in measure 12 is a good example. If the stretch feels too wide or awkward, You can play the “leaps” with the right hand instead.

  • Use of Pedal:

Use the sustain pedal throughout the piece, but ensure the transitions are clean.
